Cannabis Breeding News and Thoughts

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

Here we discuss the current state of cannabis breeding, including industrial hemp, fads, and discuss the years season as it relates to what's hot and what's not.

In 2020 we saw the USDA issue it's Interim Rules on Industrial hemp. Some states, like New York and Colorado, have either pushed the envelope on regulations, or outright refused to comply with the new 2018 Farm Bill. As a farmer and a breeder of hemp genetics, there are several things that I have issue with in the 2018 Farm Bill. It seems to me, the USDA, just like all other agencies of government, are trying to write themselves job security into compliance and regulation. One of the main issues facing breeders and farmers alike, is the Total THC rule. This new rule, which states plants must pass compliance THC testing with a TOTAL THC concentration by weight of no more that 0.3%, makes it almost impossible to have a fully mature crop, and still pass testing. This is an undeniably low concentration of THC, and it flies in the face of the governments own definition of "Hemp". We will discuss this further in a blog post specifically regarding this issue.
